6. Olive Duran, Stylist

The Slow Exposure Podcast is a series of conversations speaking to experts from all different corners of the fashion industry, hosted by Eliza Edwards, the founder of Slow Exposure – a platform that celebrates responsible creativity with no aesthetic compromise.

In this last episode in the first series of The Slow Exposure Podcast, I sat down with the Berlin-based stylist Olive Duran. We speak about issues of racial inequality that exist both within the German fashion industry and the wider world. Olive opens up regarding her experiences as a POC working in the creative industry and as friends, we discuss how we can all work to make the fashion industry a more diverse place in the future. Please be mindful of the delicate nature of this conversation, and in the wake of the events of 2020 how to go forward with understanding and knowledge.

This conversation illustrates that sustainability within the fashion industry is urgent both from an environmental and ethical perspective.

5. Erica Toogood, Co-Founder of Toogood

The Slow Exposure Podcast is a series of conversations speaking to experts from all different corners of the fashion industry, hosted by Eliza Edwards, the founder of Slow Exposure – a platform that celebrates responsible creativity with no aesthetic compromise.

Last year Erica Toogood welcomed me into the Toogood house, a London-based design studio nestled in East London. When I say house, I really mean house; the internationally-renowned sisters Faye and Erica, have created a multiple-storey treasure trove for thoughtful design in fashion, furniture and interiors. Toogood, known for its signature “Roly-Poly” chair, has exhibited in museums such as the V&A. Toogood clothing beloved for its unique, sturdy, sculptural character, can be found at stores such as Dover Street Market.

I’ve spoken before about my curiosity for creators that abstain from squeezing in the word sustainability wherever they can, so it was a pleasure to talk to Erica about Toogood’s endeavor to be kind to the planet whilst resisting the urge to shout it from the rooftops.

4. Melissa Drier, Fashion Journalist

The Slow Exposure Podcast is a series of conversations speaking to experts from all different corners of the fashion industry, hosted by Eliza Edwards, the founder of Slow Exposure – a platform that celebrates responsible creativity with no aesthetic compromise.

Last year I sat across the table from the American journalist Melissa Drier in her ground-floor flat in Berlin, with two glasses of red wine between us. Melissa, who was the former German correspondent for Women’s Wear Daily, has interviewed the likes of Jil Sander in the early stages of Sander’s career. Growing up in New York, with parents who enjoyed the art of dressing up, Melissa has a true understanding for quality.

Our conversation makes light of the extreme quantities we are asked to consume in modern times and we discuss whether beautiful design is a thing of the past. Together we unpick the umbrella term of ‘sustainability’ and how we can make our clothing last longer.

Melissa is not on Instagram but if you have any questions for her, I’m @theslowexposure, and promise to forward them on. Alternatively, my email is elizacamillaedwards@gmail.com

3. Patrick McDowell, British Fashion Designer

The Slow Exposure Podcast is a series of conversations speaking to experts from all different corners of the fashion industry, hosted by Eliza Edwards, the founder of Slow Exposure – a platform that celebrates responsible creativity with no aesthetic compromise.

In this week’s episode I sit down with the Liverpudlian upcycling designer Patrick McDowell in his East London home. During an internship at Burberry, he wrote to the then-Creative Director Christopher Bailey to ask if he could use the luxury brand’s discarded fabrics to create upcycled pieces. His imagination when repurposing materials knows no bounds - whilst poking around his flat I found a pair of recycled, jewel-encrusted sneakers he was working on. Patrick has gone on to found a namesake brand that has challenged our preconceptions of what upcycling should look like.

Originally I had planned on the first series of this podcast to only feature women, but after learning about his collection “firefighting aunties” I wanted to hear Patrick’s story. Patrick’s work celebrates the women in his life that have been putting out metaphorical fires since he can remember.

Shortly after our conversation, Patrick was nominated for the #StellaMcCartney TodayForTomorrow Award by Anna Wintour.

2. Orsola de Castro, Founder & Global Creative Director of Fashion Revolution

The Slow Exposure Podcast is a series of conversations speaking to experts from all different corners of the fashion industry, hosted by Eliza Edwards, the founder of Slow Exposure – a platform that celebrates responsible creativity with no aesthetic compromise.

My guest this week is someone I have admired for years, a pioneer within many corners of the fashion industry. It’s difficult to find the right balance between fashion activism and resisting the temptation to shame fast fashion brands and individuals. It sometimes feels easier to lay the blame with others, rather than criticise our own behaviour. But when Orsola de Castro founded Fashion Revolution back in 2013, in response to the Rana Plaza disaster, she wasn’t working to shame but rather to inspire and spark an interest in creating positive change within the fashion industry.

Orsola’s book “Loved Clothes Last: How the Joy of Rewearing and Repairing Your Clothes Can Be a Revolutionary Act” published by Penguin Books Ltd and on shelves 11th February 2021, is available for pre-order now via this link.

1. Cora Hilts, founder of Rêve En Vert

The Slow Exposure Podcast is a series of conversations speaking to experts from all different corners of the fashion industry, hosted by Eliza Edwards, the founder of Slow Exposure – a platform that celebrates responsible creativity with no aesthetic compromise.

In this first episode, I speak to Cora Hilts. I sat down with the founder of Rêve En Vert, the luxury retail platform for sustainable goods, in her home in November 2019, we chatted about prejudices she faced as a businesswoman in the boardroom, the lasting influence growing up in Main has had on her life and how to determine what makes a brand truly conscious.

A quick note: there is some light swearing in this episode.
